How to wire a Cat5e / Cat6 Ethernet RJ45 Network Cable

by DoItYourShelf

Make sure you're using Cat6 cable with Cat6 plugs and Cat5e cable with Cat5e plugs - they're different

In Cat6 plugs the cables are staggered up and down, in Cat5e the cables are in a straight line

If you're using a cable boot to protect the retaining tab, place it on the wire before you start and slide down

If you have a cable sleeve cutter, gently score the outside of the cable a few centimetres down

Most crimping tools have a blade to score the cable, so you can use that as well

Remove the outer sleeve and separate the cables

There are four pairs of cables: Orange/White-Orange, Green/White-Green, Blue/White-Blue and Brown/White-Brown

There are 2 wiring schemes: T-568A and T-568B - B is more common. It doesn't matter which but use the same on both ends

We're using T-568B which goes: White-Orange Orange White-Green Blue White-Blue Green White-Brown Brown left to right

Straighten out the cables and arrange them side by side in the correct order

Gently feed the cables into the plug, tab side down - grooves inside will guide each cable into the right position

Pass-through plugs let you push the cables all the way through, so you can easily check the order is still correct

Pass-through crimpers will trim the excess, for normal crimpers push wires as far as possible and trim with scissors

Once trimmed, pull the cables slightly back inside the plug so they're flush with the edge

Place carefully in the crimping tool and squeeze firmly a couple of times

Slide the boot up to the plug and push in, ensuring the retaining tab is protected under the boot

Repeat on the other end

Use a cable tester to check all connections are good - if not all light up then re-crimp carefully

When all connections light up on the tester, the cable is good
